The Gunflint Trail Historical Society

THE PEOPLE:
Populations To Be Covered in the Museum

Pre-Historic People: The Forgotten Ones. The USFS has information on them and will help us with this. They have some artifacts that were found at archeological digs on the Gunflint Trail.

Native American: Our Neighbors. Contact - Grand Portage Reservation. Staff works with the Minnesota Historical Society. Peaceful, helpful relationships.

Voyageurs: Wandering Vagabonds. Colorful explorers and traders but their work was physically brutal. Contact - Minnesota Historical Society. They have some artifacts that were found by diving around the rapids on the Granite River. Lob Pine. Height of Land ceremony. Birch bark canoe with passengers and cargo.

Miners: The Searchers. These white men followed a promise of mineral wealth and used it to open up the country. They were in some ways similar to the Forty-Niners of California but they never made any great finds. Their work has continued even to the recent past. Paulson Mine

Loggers: The Harvesters. These men and women harvested the great stands of Norway and White Pines. Most of the work was done by hand and the timber was huge. Railroads put in by logging companies.

Resorters: The Adapters. They followed the loggers and established resorts and canoe outfitters for the tourists who were to come. Because there were few services and supplies available, these people learned to adapt what they had to do a job.

Residents: The Homeowners. The first of these people were single men who made their living working for the resorts or logging companies. Eventually summer homeowners built cabins on the lakes. Later people built homes for retirement.

Governmental agencies: USFS, State Forestry, CCC, International Boundary Commission, DNR, etc.
